BERLIN, June 8 (UPI) -- The Berlin Air and Space Show, held every two years by the German Aerospace Industries Association, opened Tuesday at the Berlin-Schonefeld Airport.
Organizers said 1,153 exhibitors from 47 nations will present examples of advanced technology, including about 300 aircraft, some of which will be making a world debut. The trade show will include more than 100 conferences and workshops.
The European Space Agency, the German Aerospace Center and the association jointly designed a special pavilion -- "Space for Earth" -- in which visitors can learn more about European space programs and German national space activities.
Peter Hulsroj, ESA director of legal affairs and external relations, said the air show provides "the opportunity to underline how space technology and applications have helped improve our quality of life and monitor our environment."
Visitors to the pavilion can see an Ariane 5 engine and a presentation of Europe's spaceport at Kourou in French Guiana. Earth observation and climate change are also central to the exhibition, with a special display of ESA's Earth Explorer missions that focus on the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere and the Earth's interior with the overall emphasis on learning more about their interactions and impact on human activity.
The space pavilion will be open to the general public Friday through Sunday. Access will be limited to trade visitors during the remainder of the show.
