Satellites measure world glacier melting
GUANGZHOU, China, June 3 (UPI) -- IBM and South China's largest hospital announced a project Thursday designed to ascertain the efficacy of certain traditional Chinese treatments.
IBM and the Guang Dong Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine said the pilot project involves new healthcare analytics technology that allows doctors to analyze thousands of anonymous electronic medical records to determine health trends across demographics for specific diseases.
The project involves the use of a first-of-its-kind IBM system called Healthcare Information Warehouse for Analytics and Sharing, which allows clinicians to extract and compile relevant patient data to quickly pinpoint critical issues and detect patterns, IBM said. Initially, Chinese clinicians will use the program to study the effects of traditional Chinese medicine in conjunction with Western medicine in treating chronic kidney disease.
"Evidence-generation is a key step towards making raw health data more usable for clinicians at the point of care," said Bill Cody, IBM's senior manager for healthcare informatics. "Our collaboration with Guang Dong Hospital will make it easier for physicians to extract and analyze key data about chronic disease treatment, paving the way for evidence-based and more cost-effective medicine."
