NASA says 'Inspire' enrollment is open

WASHINGTON, May 3 (UPI) -- NASA says it's accepting applications from U.S. high school students for a program that enables them to work with the space agency's engineers and scientists.

The program is the Interdisciplinary National Science Program Incorporating Research Experience, which is nicknamed "Inspire."

Officials said it provides students an online learning experience, with opportunities to interact with their peers, NASA engineers and scientists.

"Students selected for the program will have the option to compete for unique grade-appropriate experiences during the summer of 2011 at NASA facilities and participating universities," the space agency said.

It said the program is designed to encourage students in ninth through 12th grades to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

Applications will be accepted through June 30, with NASA to announce its selections in September.
