Canadian-made dried meat recalled

WASHINGTON, March 17 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service says some Canadian-produced dried meat products exported into the United States may be contaminated with bacteria.

The FSIS said the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a warning this week about some Siena-brand products that might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

Officials said the products produced by Siena Foods LTD of Toronto include, but are not limited to: Cacciatore mild salami, coppa, prosciuttini, prosciuttini hot and prosciutto cotto.

The FSIS said the individually wrapped products have variable weights and "Best Before" dates through June 22 and are stamped No. Est. 212 inside the CFIA mark of inspection. However, the original brand and/or best before dates may not have been transferred at deli counters to consumer packages. The FSIS said people who might have purchased any of the products and do not know original brand and code are advised to check with their retailer or supplier to determine if they have the affected product.

Officials said consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious and potentially fatal disease.
