Some Castella-brand soup base is recalled

WASHINGTON, March 3 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says certain lots of Castella-brand chicken soup base are being recalled because of possible contamination.

The FDA said Castella Imports of Hauppauge, N.Y., announced the soup base might be contaminated with salmonella bacteria, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections,

Company officials said the recalled product contains hydrolyzed vegetable protein manufactured by Basic Food Flavors Inc. of Las Vegas. That company is recalling the vegetable protein because of bacterial contamination.

Castella Chicken Soup Base is distributed to food service companies in 25-pound containers and to retail stores nationwide in 1-pound opaque plastic jars with a white cap, gold seal and a light yellow label. Lots being recalled are 0912039918, 1001121915, 1002013074 and 1002194266. The expiration dates range from Dec. 3, 2010, through Dec. 28, 2011.

Consumers can return the recalled soup base for a refund or contact Castella Imports at 631-231-5500 for additional information.
