MADISON, Wis., Feb. 17 (UPI) -- The Wisconsin state Assembly voted to ban the sale of baby bottles and certain children's cups that contain the chemical bisphenol A.
The 95-2 vote sends the measure to Gov. Jim Doyle, who is expected to sign it, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said Wednesday.
The measure specifies so-called sippy cups used by young children may not contain BPA, and those items must include a label alerting consumers to the fact they do not contain the compound.
The Journal Sentinel said the bill, which was passed by the state Senate last month, was the result of its investigative series on the chemical industry's relationship with federal regulators in crafting a government policy on BPA at a time when scientific studies were raising safety concerns.
Studies indicate BPA can leech out of plastic when it is heated and get into food. It has been linked to cancer, diabetes, hyperactivity and other disorders, the newspaper said.
Similar bans are already in effect in Connecticut, Minnesota, Chicago and a number of other communities.
