Filberts recalled for salmonella risk

NEWBURG, Ore., Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Willamette Filbert Growers of Newberg, Ore., has recalled nearly 30,000 pounds of shelled hazelnuts because of a risk of salmonella, federal officials said.

Salmonella was found in a production lot at the facility where the nuts were shelled, the U.S Food and Drug Administration said in a release Friday. No illnesses have been reported.

The company recalled all shelled hazelnuts processed from Oct. 12 through Nov. 25 in 25-pound boxes labeled with code numbers 289091A and 311091A. The boxes were labeled Willamette Filbert Growers or Meridian Organic Hazelnuts.

The boxes were sold in Oregon and California to wholesale distributors and through direct delivery. Unshelled hazelnuts sold by the company were not subject to the recall.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children, frail and elderly people and people with weakened immune systems.
