HOUSTON, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- A Houston cardiologist said his study revealed seven children at a Houston middle school had undiagnosed heart conditions.

Cardiologist Dr. John Higgins said while conducting heart screenings at Houston's Key Middle School, he found seven of the 94 sixth-graders tested had previously undiscovered heart conditions that could have led to cardiac arrest, the Houston Chronicle reported Thursday.

"Usually, the first time these kids have symptoms is during cardiac arrest," Higgins said.

Higgins said his Houston Early Age Risk Testing and Screening study will focus on conducting heart screenings on 1,500 middle-school children in Houston.

The cardiologist said the initial findings of his study highlight a need for routine heart examinations for sixth-graders throughout the United States.

"We want to save young lives, and we want to promote safe exercise," Higgins said.

The Chronicle said the Memorial Hermann Foundation and the Houston Rockets are funding the $1 million study, whose preliminary results are available in the journal Circulation.
