Satellites measure world glacier melting
PARIS, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- French retrovirologist Thierry Heidmann has been awarded the 2009 Jeang Retrovirology Prize for pioneering research into endogenous retroviruses.
The prize, awarded annually, recognizes pioneering retrovirologists aged 45 to 60.
Heidmann heads a governmental laboratory at University Paris-Sud and Institut Gustave Roussy in Villejuif, France.
In an interview published in the journal Retrovirology, Heidmann discussed the award.
"I'm really honored to receive this prize, which, I hope, will attract more people to study the field of endogenous retroviruses and mobile retroelements," he said. "These are elements that contribute to evolution, and to mammalian physiology and pathology -- their impact has been long overlooked."
The Jeang Retrovirology Prize recipient is selected by journal's editors based on nominations submitted by the journal's editorial board. The prize consists of $3,000 and a crystal trophy.
