WASHINGTON, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says the Procter & Gamble Co. is voluntarily recalling three lots of its Vicks Sinex nasal spray in three countries.
The FDA said P&G initiated the recall in the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom because the product might contain the bacteria B. cepacia, which can cause serious infections in people with a compromised immune system. The company said the bacterium poses little medical risk to healthy individuals.
Being recalled in the United States is "Vicks Sinex Vapospray 12-Hour Decongestant Ultra Fine Mist," lot No. 9239028831; being recalled in the United Kingdom is "Vicks Sinex Micromist Aqueous Nasal Spray Solution," lot No. 9224028832; recalled in Germany is "Wick Sinex Schnupfenspray Dosiersystem," lot No. 9224028833.
The Cincinnati company said the lot number is listed on both the outer carton and the bottle.
P&G said it found the bacteria in a small amount of product from the U.S. lot number and is conducting testing on the U.K. and German lots that were produced from the same batch of raw material mixture.
Consumers who have the recalled products can contact the company for a replacement or refund coupon. Consumers in the United States can call 877-876-7881; in the United Kingdom call 0800-5555-15; and in Germany call 0800-111-6131.
