WASHINGTON, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall of Majesty-brand cantaloupes due to possible salmonella contamination.
The FDA said Five Crowns Marketing of Brawley, Calif., initiated the voluntarily recall after a laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of the bacterium.
The recalled cantaloupes were distributed to wholesalers and retailers in Alabama, California, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Officials said the cantaloupes might have been sold without individual label stickers from cartons marked "Majesty" and identified by lot numbers "198 2" or "198 3." Cantaloupes displaying stickered labels are also identified as "Majesty," the company said.
Although all of the potentially contaminated cantaloupes should have passed through the distribution chain by now, the company said consumers who recently bought cantaloupes should check with their place of purchase to determine if the fruit is affected by the recall.
