WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the nationwide recall of Dentley's-brand beef hooves sold by PetSmart stores due to possible contamination.
The FDA said two products were being recalled; Dentley's bulk cattle hoof and Dentley's 10-pack beef hooves sold between Oct. 9 and Nov. 3. The company said the product might be contaminated with salmonella bacteria, which can cause severe illness and even death.
The affected products were shipped to three PetSmart distribution centers in Ottawa, Ill.; Groveport, Ohio; and Newnan, Ga.; and then shipped directly to certain PetSmart stores. Although the affected product was not shipped to every store, as a precautionary measure PetSmart recalled the product from all of its U.S. stores and its Web site.
Many dogs do not show clinical signs of salmonella, the FDA said, but when they do, they often have diarrhea or other signs of systemic infections.
Customers can return the recalled product for a refund or contact the company for more information at 888-839-9638.
