FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., Oct. 30 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug administration is being asked to approve emergency use of a new test to diagnose the H1N1 swine flu virus, officials said.
The request comes from Translational Genomics Research Institute in Arizona, which plans to present information about the test Sunday at the annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America in Philadelphia.
The experimental test detects influenza, as some other tests now do, but quickly informs doctors about what strain of flu is present and whether or not that strain may be resistant to Tamiflu, the primary anti-viral drug used to treat H1N1, said Dr. Paul Keim, a director of the institute.
Currently, only the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a few labs can test for the H1N1 flu, said David Engelthaler, the institute's director of programs.
"This new test would put the power in the hands of the clinician to determine if their drugs will work or not," Engelthaler said.
