Sunken WWI British sub found in Baltic Sea

TALLINN, Estonia, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- A British submarine that vanished in the Baltic Sea during World War I has been found near the Estonian island of Dago, officials said.

The HMS E18 last was seen in May 1916 when it was sent with five other submarines to support Russia against German ships.

The sub was discovered this month by the Swedish exploration firm Deep Sea productions, which used old maps detailing the locations of mines to find the sub, The Local reported Friday.

The sub was found on the sea bed with its hatch open, indicating the HMS E18 was at the surface when it experienced problems with 30 British and three Russian seamen aboard, Deep Sea officials said Thursday.

The HMS E18 was one of 58 E-class subs used by the British Royal Navy during World War I, the first major conflict in which British subs were fitted with additional torpedoes and used as weapons of war, The Local reported.
