Some Kroger-brand hazelnut spread recalled

DAYTON, Ohio, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- An Ohio food distributor says it is recalling one lot of its Kroger-brand hazelnut spread because it might contain undeclared peanuts.

International Bazaar Inc. of Dayton, Ohio, said the recalled hazelnut spread, packed in Italy in 13-ounce plastic jars, has a March 2011 sell-by date. Consumers who have an allergy to peanuts may run the risk of a serious allergic reaction if they consume any food containing such ingredients.

The company said 65 cases of the hazelnut spread were distributed to Kroger stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The manufacturer received a complaint from two consumers in France that had an allergic reaction after consuming hazelnut spread from the same batch that was distributed under a different label. Testing revealed the product was found to contain trace amounts of peanuts.

The recall, officials said, is a precautionary action and consumers who are not allergic to peanuts face no safety risk.

People who have purchased Kroger Hazelnut Spread with a sell by date of March 2011 can return it to any Kroger store for a refund. Consumers with questions can contact International Bazaar at 937278-3533.
