PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- U.S. and Canadian scientists say they've discovered a Central American spider species that is the first known to mainly survive on plant food.

Scientists had thought all the approximately 40,000 species of spiders in the world were strict predators, feeding on insects or other animals. But the study led by Christopher Meehan of Villanova University and Eric Olson of Brandeis University revealed a small Central American jumping spider species (Bagheera kiplingi) that lives across much of Central America and southern Mexico prefers plant food.

The research that included Matthew Reudink and T. Kurt Kyser of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, and Robert Curry of Villanova University is reported in the journal Current Biology.
