NASA picks students for education program

WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- NASA says it has selected 1,732 high school students from 48 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico to participate in an education project.

The project is the Interdisciplinary National Science Program Incorporating Research Experience, also known as Inspire, that's designed to encourage students in grades nine through 12 to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The selected students will participate in an online learning community in which they have the opportunity to interact with their peers and NASA engineers and scientists. It also provides appropriate grade-level educational activities, discussion boards and chat rooms for participants and their families to gain exposure to the many career opportunities at NASA.

The selected students also have the option to compete for workshops and internships at NASA facilities and participating U.S. universities next summer.

Inspire is part of the U.S. space agency's education efforts to engage and retain students in disciplines critical to the NASA's missions.
