SEOUL, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Yonsei University College of Medicine surgeons in Korea say they have treated 200 thyroid cancer patients with a new robot-assisted endoscopic technique.
The medical scientists said the minimally invasive operation, which has several technical and cosmetic benefits the traditional open operation does not offer, has been delayed in head and neck surgery due to deep anatomical space and delicate nerves and blood vessels in those areas.
"This innovative robot-assisted technique for thyroid surgery represents an exciting new treatment option for patients with thyroid cancer," said Dr. Woong Youn Chung, who led the research. "Not only does it offer good clinical outcomes, but it also spares patients from the large, visible scar that results from traditional open surgery."
The technique and its outcomes are reported in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
