CLEVELAND, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- U.S. scientists say they've discovered elderly peptic ulcer patients undergoing endoscopy within 24 hours of presenting at a hospital have better outcomes.
The study by researchers at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland said such patients with peptic ulcer bleeding also had a two-day shorter hospital stay and were less likely to require upper gastrointestinal surgery than patients who did not receive endoscopy within the first day of presentation.
The researchers said unless specific contraindications exist, the data supports the routine use of early endoscopy for upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
Upper endoscopy involves inserting a thin, flexible tube with a light and a camera on its end through the mouth to help visualize the esophagus, stomach and duodenum to aid in diagnosing and treating peptic ulcer bleeding.
The study appears in the August issue of the journal GIE: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
