Beef recalled in Oregon and Washington

WASHINGTON, June 3 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall of approximately 40,000 pounds of possible tainted ground beef products.

The FSIS said SP Provisions of Portland, Ore., recalled the beef products possibly contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria that were distributed to retail establishments, hotels, restaurants and institutions in Oregon and Washington between April 8 and May 28.

The products subject to recall include Cascade Natural Beef and SP Provisions ground beef, chili grind and ground beef patties. Each product bears the establishment number "EST. 2866" inside the U.S. Department of Agriculture mark of inspection.

The problem was discovered through FSIS microbiological sampling. Officials said E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in the most severe cases, kidney failure.
