PARIS, May 11 (UPI) -- The European Space Agency said it was making preparations for the introduction of its newest astronauts.

The space agency began the search for new astronauts last year, inviting applications from European citizens who wished to join the European Astronaut Corps to take part in future space missions.

"Following a very demanding selection process, which started out with 8,413 valid applications, ESA is ready to announce the individuals who are to become the new European astronauts.

The astronauts will be introduced during a news conference at the ESA's Paris headquarters May 20.
