OTTAWA, April 8 (UPI) -- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Canada Safeway Ltd. are recalling some Safeway-brand ground beef due to possible E. coli contamination.
The CFIA said the lean ground beef affected by the recall was sold at some Canada Safeway stores in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Northeastern Ontario. The affected packages bear a "Best Before" or a "Freeze By" date of March 19 and were sold March 13-19. Consumers who might have the product in their freezers are advised not to consume the ground meat.
Food contaminated with E. coli might not look or smell spoiled but eating food contaminated with the bacteria can cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses.
The manufacturer, Vantage Foods of Winnipeg, is voluntarily recalling the beef.
Consumers with questions can contact Canada Safeway at 403-730-3508.
