More U.S. pistachio nut recalls announced

WASHINGTON, April 2 (UPI) -- After months of hundreds of peanut-product recalls, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is involved in another massive recall -- that of pistachio nuts.

Setton Farms of Terra Bella, Calif., has recalled about 1 million pounds of pistachios because of possible salmonella contamination. Setton, the second largest U.S. pistachio processor, distributes its California pistachios across the United States and to more than 30 other countries.

Among recent recalls, The Kroger Co. expanded its recall of shelled pistachios to stores in 31 states operating under the names Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Fry's, King Soopers, Smith's, Dillons, QFC, City Market, Foods Co., Jay C, Scott's, Owen's, Baker's, Gerbes, Hilander and Pay Less.

Kroger is recalling Private Selection-brand pistachios with sell-by dates of "JAN-14-10," "FEB-10-10," "FEB-11-10," "MAR-23-10," "DEC-13-09" and "DEC-14-09."

Other pistachio recalls include:

--The Kar Nut Products Co.: Kar's- and Second Nature-brand products containing pistachio nuts sold nationwide.

--Whole Foods Markets: Dry roasted and salted pistachios sold nationwide under the 365 Everyday Value-brand with best before dates of "07/08/2009 GL1," "07/08/2009 GL2" and "11/27/2009 GL1."

--John B. Sanfilippo and Son, Inc.: Fisher-brand pistachios sold in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, South Dakota, Washington and Wisconsin.

--Publix Super Markets: Publix-brand 6-oz. containers of pistachios.

--The Fritiz Company Inc.: Fritzie Fresh-brand 4-oz. bags of pistachios with a "08361" date code. The nuts were sold in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana.
