Va. botanical garden welcomes two eaglets

NORFOLK, Va., March 23 (UPI) -- A botanical garden in Norfolk, Va., is home to two new eaglets whose eggs hatched in recent days, a site spokeswoman said Monday.

Norfolk Botanical Garden spokeswoman Amy Dagnall said the first eaglet hatched from its egg Saturday, followed by a second eaglet Sunday, The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot said.

Dagnall said a third egg, which has already cracked, could potentially hatch Monday.

The three eggs were laid between Feb. 10-17 by a bald eagle at the site, despite the fact bald eagles typically only lay two eggs at a time.

The botanical garden has served as a home to the eaglets' parents for six years, during which time the birds have raised a total of nine eaglets, the newspaper reported.

The garden's Web site said the baby birds are never named by site employees to avoid the wild animals being seen as pets.

The newest garden residents can be seen in their pine tree nest nearly 85 feet up in the air through the botanical site's Eagle Cam, the Virginian-Pilot said.
