Peanut butter recall includes dog treats

WASHINGTON, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the nationwide recall of possibly contaminated peanut butter products has expanded to include some dog biscuits.

The FDA said PetSmart Inc. of Phoenix, Ariz., is voluntarily recalling seven of its Grreat Choice-brand dog biscuit products that contain peanut paste made by the Peanut Corp. of America. That company is the focus of a FDA investigation into potential salmonella contamination of peanut butter and paste made at its Blakely, Ga., plant.

The recalled Grreat Choice dog biscuits were sold between Aug. 21 and Jan. 19.

The FDA also announced Nature's Path Organic Foods of Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, is recalling its peanut butter flavor Optimum Energy Bars; Country Maid Inc. of West Bend, Iowa, is voluntarily recalling its 2 pound packages of Classic Breaks Peanut Butter Cookie Dough; Ready Pac Foods, Inc. of Irwindale, Calif., is voluntary recalling certain celery and apple products containing peanut butter; and NutriSystems Inc. of Horsham, Pa., is recalling its NutriSystem-brand peanut butter granola bars.

The recalled cookie dough was distributed nationwide by fundraising groups between Oct. 6 and Jan. 9 The affected energy bars are marked with a "best before" date of "01OCT09A"; the Ready Pac items include expiration dates between Dec. 28 and Feb. 2; and the NutriSystem granola bars include lot codes TC08158A, TC08188A, TC09158A, TC09168A, TC09178A, TC11148A and TC11178A.

The FDA said major brands of peanut butter sold in jars are not affect by the recalls.
