Report says GMO-free labeling misleading

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Consumers in Sweden are being misled by labels falsely claiming food products are free of genetically modified organisms, a government report contends.

A test by Sweden's National Food Administration of 29 products showed 10 products had labels proclaiming they were GMO-free, yet four were found to have traces of GMOs, The Local reported Saturday.

"The increase in 'GMO Free' labeling is misleading. It's extremely hard to hold a product completely free from GMOs throughout the production chain," said National Food Administration inspector Zofia Kurowska.

Foodstuffs with more than 0.9 percent of a genetically modified component must be labeled as containing GMOs, under Swedish law.
