WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall of some ReliOn-brand single-use, disposable hypodermic syringes due to a potential health hazard.
The FDA said the manufacturer, the Tyco Healthcare Group LP (Covidien), said the pre-filled insulin syringes with permanently affixed hypodermic needles might contain as much as 2 1/2 times the intended dose. That poses a health risk to patients who could suffer hypoglycemia and even death.
The syringes were distributed by the Can-Am Care Corp. and were sold only at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores. The recall applies only to lot No. 813900, ReliOn 1cc, 31-gauge, 100 units for use with U-100 insulin.
Only ReliOn syringes from that lot number and labeled as 100 units for use with U-100 insulin are subject to the recall, the FDA said.
The FDA said the recalled 471,000 individual syringes were sold at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores from Aug. 1 until Oct. 8.
Consumers may return the syringes for a replacement and can contact the company at 866-780-5436 for further information.
