New theory addresses frozen Earth paradox

SEATTLE, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle is giving 104 grants of $100,000 each to researchers exploring new ways to improve global health.
The grants were given to scientists from 22 countries who are working on "bold and largely unproven" ideas to prevent or cure infectious diseases such as AIDS and tuberculosis and limit the emergence of drug resistance, the foundation said Wednesday in a release.
"We were hoping this program would level the playing field so anyone with a transformational idea could more quickly assess its potential for the benefit of global health," said Dr. Tachi Yamada, president of global health at the Gates Foundation. "The quality of the applications exceeded all of our expectations."
