Canada recalls China-made sour milk drink

OTTAWA, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning people not to drink Mengniu-brand strawberry flavor sour milk beverage due to possible melamine contamination.

The CFIA said the Chinese-produced product's importer, Haofine International Trading Inc. of Edmonton, Alberta, noted the packages have no English or French on them, only Chinese characters. Being recalled are 250 milliliter packages with UPC 6923644 242930. Only packages distributed in Alberta and Saskatchewan are affected.

The CFIA said the recall is a part of the Canadian government's ongoing investigation into milk and milk-derived products from China that might have been distributed in Canada. Melamine is a chemical compound used in a number of commercial and industrial applications. Canada does not allow its use as a food ingredient.
