DRESDEN, Germany, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- German scientists say they have developed an organic method of protecting plants from disease by using electrons to kill fungal spores and viruses.

Conventional farming practices involve treating seeds with fungicides, insecticides and herbicides to protect against fungi and insects, as well as suppressing weeds.

Now scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Electron Beam and Plasma Technology in Dresden, Germany, say they've developed an alternative to chemicals.

"Instead of using chemical products to eradicate these spores, we make use of accelerated electrons," said team leader Olaf Roder. He said the electrons destroy the chemical bonds that hold together the molecules in the fungal spores and other pathogens, but without generating heat.

The research is to be demonstrated Oct. 28-30 during the "Parts2Clean" fair in Stuttgart, Germany.
