Scotland's emissions on the rise

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Scottish officials said greenhouse gas emissions rose 5.4 percent between 2005 and 2006 because of the country's dependence on coal-fired power.

Emissions in England fell 1.4 percent over the same period, the Scotsman newspaper reported Friday.

The Scottish government is trying to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050. A government spokesman said officials plan to have a large-scale carbon-capture and storage process in place by 2015, the newspaper said.
