NASA images show Mars' ice dunes

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Images taken by a space probe 200 miles above the surface of Mars show a landscape of icy dunes, experts say.

The Times of London reported Saturday that the polar landscape was etched by winds.

The images, taken by NASA's High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment, are the most revealing yet of part Mars's north polar landscape.

The rippled landscape is being created by winds traveling in a different direction to those that originally formed the dunes, said Alfred McEwen, principal investigator for the project.

The 1,005 images taken of Mars were made between April 26 and July 21, using a high-resolution camera so powerful it can reveal details on the planet as small as a chair.
