BPA linked to adult health problems

CHICAGO , Sept. 16 (UPI) -- A large-scale U.S. study suggests exposure to Bisphenol A is linked to health problems such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes in adults.

BPA is widely used in epoxy resins lining food and beverage containers. The report, published in the Journal of the American Medical Society, said higher BPA concentrations were also associated with liver-enzyme abnormalities.

The Chicago Tribune said the report was released early to coincide with a U.S. Food and Drug Administration scientific advisory hearing Tuesday on the use of BPA in food containers.

The JAMA report said humans are exposed to BPA primarily through food but also through drinking water, dental sealants, dermal exposure and inhalation of household dust. Detectable levels of BPA have been found in more than 90 percent of the U.S. population, the report said.

The findings by researchers from Peninsula Medical School in Britain were based on data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention involving 1,455 respondents aged 18 to 74.
