14th Heinz Award recipients are announced

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- The Heinz Family Foundation says five Americans have been selected to receive a $250,000 award in the memory of the late U.S. Sen. John Heinz, R-Pa.

The 14th annual Heinz Award recipients and their categories are:

--Technology, Economy and Employment: Associate Professor Joseph DeRisi of the University of California-San Francisco, a noted researcher in molecular genomics.

-- Arts and Humanities: Ann Hamilton, a visual artist and educator from Columbus, Ohio.

-- Environment: Thomas FitzGerald, founder and director of the Kentucky Resources Council.

-- Human Condition: Brenda Krause Eheart, founder of Generations of Hope and Hope Meadows of Champaign, Ill.

-- Public Policy: Robert Greenstein, founder and executive director of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington.

The Heinz Family Foundation began as a charitable trust established by the late senator in 1984. His widow, Teresa Heinz, created the Heinz Awards in 1993 as the primary activity of the foundation.

Nominations are submitted by anonymous nominators, all experts in their fields. The award recipients are selected by the foundation's board of directors upon the recommendation of a blue-ribbon panel of jurors in each category.

The awards will be presented during an Oct. 21 private ceremony in Pittsburgh.
