MANCHESTER, England, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- An Indian study suggests holy basil has antioxidant properties that help combat signs of aging.

The study, presented at the British Pharmaceutical Conference in Manchester, England, found that holy basil extract protected against free radicals, the Telegraph newspaper said Monday.

Holy basil has sharp-tasting leaves that are often used in Asian dishes. The extract is in the ancient system of Ayurvedic medicine as a rejuvenation drug, the newspaper said.

Dr. Vaibhav Shinde from Poona College of Pharmacy in India said the study validates the traditional use of the herb in treating a variety of disorders.
