WASHINGTON, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall of Trans-Ocean-brand cracked pepper style smoked salmon because of possible contamination.

The FDA said Trans-Ocean Products Inc. of Bellingham, Wash., initiated the recall of the 4-ounce cans of lot number 54933-2 because they might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.

The recalled cracked pepper style smoked salmon was distributed to three supermarket chains in seven states: Brookshire Brothers in Texas and Louisiana; Price Choppers in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Vermon, and Giant Eagle in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The product is vacuum-packaged in a resealable purple plastic pouch. The lot number is printed on the back panel of the package.

Consumers can return the recalled product for a refund or contact the company for further information at 800-290-2722.
