U.S. publication wins an excellence award

WASHINGTON, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- The U.S. Department of Energy says its "Carbon Sequestration Atlas of the United States and Canada" has won a publication excellence award.

Department officials said the atlas was awarded an APEX Grand Award for non-profit, one-of-a-kind publications.

APEX is the Annual Awards for Publication Excellence Competition sponsored by the editors of "Writing That Works," published by Communications Concepts Inc. Of nearly 4,500 entries submitted, only 120 APEX Grand Awards signifying achievement in communications were presented.

"We have seen the value that our first carbon sequestration atlas has had in providing sequestration information to local, state, and other government agencies, as well as industry and academia," said Acting Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy James Slutz. "We are equally proud to learn that our atlas has also been recognized in the field of publication as an outstanding vehicle for communications."

The Energy Department's National Energy Technology Laboratory, which developed the publication, said its atlas presents the first coordinated assessment of carbon capture and storage potential across the majority of the United States and portions of Western Canada.

An updated edition is to be published in November.
