BOSTON, July 22 (UPI) -- The Massachusetts Legislature is considering a bill that would outlaw the hallucinogenic plant salvia divinorum.

The plant, which is legal in most states, produces short, intense hallucinogenic experiences when smoked. A dozen states have outlawed or started regulating the drug, and more than a dozen other states are considering a ban, The Boston Globe reported Tuesday.

The University of Maryland's Center for Substance Abuse Research said salvia's psychoactive ingredient, Salvinorum A, is "the most potent naturally occurring hallucinogen," the newspaper reported. There is little information about long-term health impacts and no Food and Drug Administration-approved medical uses.
