ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, July 22 (UPI) -- Russian scientists said they've installed a network of weather stations in Antarctica to provide automatic weather updates.

The weather stations are part of a renewed research effort in the Pacific sector of Antarctica, Itar-Tass reported Monday. Research in the region was halted 16-years-ago because of budget cuts.

The Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute of the Federal Hydro-Meteorological Service said researchers are receiving regular reports from the Antarctic Pacific coast. Russia has five active weather stations and one field base, Itar-Tass said.
