Washington turning to bike-sharing plan

Bicycles in their kiosks await the official launch of the "Velib" citywide bicycle program in Paris on July 15, 2007. Parisians and visitors can rent a bicycle free of charge for the first half hour from among the new fleet of 20,000 that will be available from approximately 750 automatic kiosks around the city. WASHINGTON, April 27 (UPI) -- A new bike-sharing venture in Washington called SmartBike DC will allow people to rent bicycles using only a membership card, city officials say.

Washington Transportation Department official Jim Sebastian said the new public venture will have 10 locations throughout the district and will have 120 bicycles available for rent, The New York Times reported Sunday.

Sebastian, who is in charge of the district's bicycle and pedestrian programs, expects the bike-sharing program to minimize transportation problems in the nation's capital.

"There's a lot of stress on our transit systems currently," said Sebastian, who identified parking and pollution problems as areas the plan will impact the most.

The automated rental program comes thanks to a deal with advertiser Clear Channel Outdoor, which will have advertising rights to all district bus shelters.

Sebastian told the Times if the program enjoys similar success as other plans in Paris and Barcelona, the number of available bikes could one day reach 1,000.
