FDA OKs Nexium for use in children

WASHINGTON, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium) for short-term use in children less than 12 years of age.

The FDA approved Nexium in two forms to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD: a delayed-release capsule and liquid form. Nexium is approved in 10 milligrams or 20 mg daily for young children, compared with 20 mg or 40 mg doses recommended for pediatric patients 12 to 17 years of age.

The FDA said Nexium is part of a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors that decrease the amount of acid produced in the stomach and help heal erosion in the lining of the esophagus.

Nexium is manufactured by AstraZeneca LP of Wilmington, Del.
