Claim: Global warming will trigger illness

LONDON, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Experts claim global warming will likely cause illness for people in Britain.

Officials present during Tuesday's conference at the Royal College of Physicians reportedly will be warned about the negative effects of global warming on the health of British people, The Times of London reported Saturday.

"The result will be fewer deaths from colds and flu, but more from strokes and heart attacks because of the heat," said Dr. Hugh Montgomery, the conference's organizer.

Research shows 75 additional deaths occur in densely populated areas for every degree of temperature increase, the British newspaper reported.

Professor Ian Roberts claims if people cut back dependence on motor transportation, it could lead to health benefits and reduce pollution, which is said to lead to global warming.

"If we design climate change policy to maximize the health benefits, it will be the silver lining to the cloud of global warming. It's the only bit of good news in the whole story," Roberts said.
