Among 60 patients studied, 73 percent of those who had gastric-banding surgery experienced complete remission of Type 2 diabetes, compared to only 13 percent of those who received standard care – counseling on diet and exercise plus, possibly, medicines like insulin, The New York Times (NYSE:NYT) said.
"I think diabetes surgery will become common within the next few years," Dr. John Dixon, lead author of the study at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, told the Times.
The study appeared Wednesday in The Journal of the American Medical Association.
