ALEXANDRIA, N.J., Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Seven bear cubs living at a New Jersey wildlife refuge have been moved from their pens to a 5,000-square-foot enclosure.

The move is a step in the process of releasing the cubs, which have lived at the Woodlands Wildlife Refuge in Alexandria Township since June, director Tracy Leaver told The Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger.

The cubs were part of a group of 10 cubs moved to the refuge when their mothers abandoned them or they were orphaned, the newspaper said. Three of the cubs were not transferred because they are still too small to move.

Moving the bears -- which weigh between 75 pounds and 130 pounds -- required a staff of 30 volunteers, who tranquilized the cubs, weighed them and then took tissue samples for the state's bear database.

Caretakers said they plan to release the bears when they are about 1 year old.
