BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Dec. 14 (UPI) -- The wreckage of Quedagh Merchant, abandoned by 17th century pirate Capt. William Kidd, was found in shallow water off an island in the Caribbean.

A team of underwater archaeologists led by Charles Beeker of Indiana University has been licensed to study the wreckage and convert the site into an underwater preserve, where it will be accessible to the public, the university said Friday in a release.

Beeker said the wreck, which was found in 10 feet of water less than 25 yards off the coast of Catalina Island in the Dominican Republic, had been sought actively by treasure hunters.

"I've been on literally thousands of shipwrecks in my career," Beeker said. "This is one of the first sites I've been on where I haven't seen any looting. We've got a shipwreck in crystal clear, pristine water that's amazingly untouched."

Kidd captured the Quedagh Merchant -- loaded with satins, silks, gold and silver -- but left the ship in the Caribbean to sail to New York on a less conspicuous sloop to clear his name.
