Rallies for climate change held worldwide

LONDON, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Environmental activists worldwide Sunday called for tough greenhouse gas emission laws as United Nations climate talks continued in Bali.

Mass demonstrations were planned for 50 cities around the world, including London where protesters were to deliver a letter to Prime Minister Gordon Brown supporting stronger climate change laws in Britain, the BBC reported.

The protests came halfway through the U.N. summit, which is considering how to cut greenhouse gas emissions after the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012. Nearly 10,000 delegates from 200 nations are in Bali for the two-week United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

"It is essential our politicians show the leadership required and ensure that the climate talks in Bali speed the world toward a low-carbon future," Friends of the Earth Director Tony Juniper told the BBC in London.
