Study says pumice a good greenhouse option

ATHENS, Greece, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Greek researchers say they've determined the most effective way to use pumice to grow greenhouse plants and vegetables in soil-less conditions.

Pumice is an inert mineral of volcanic origin that has been used for centuries as a growing medium. Researchers George Gizas and Dimitrios Savvas said pumice is readily available in many countries, relatively inexpensive and can be disposed of without harming the environment, the American Society for Horticultural Science said Thursday in a release.

Tests showed the most balanced and safe type of pumice is 0.8 millimeters that worked best in pots at least 6 inches high.

The findings were published online in the American Society for Horticultural Science's journal HortScience.
