The Dutch Kettle Co. of Bremen, Ind., recalled 94 cases of pint glass jars of the sauce because it contains undeclared fish protein (anchovy), posing a health risk for people with an allergy or severe sensitivity to fish protein.
The recalled sauce was distributed in Michigan, Indiana, New York, Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Utah.
Each private label begins with the store name followed by "Homestyle Hickory BBQ Sauce."
Two lots of jars being recalled bear the codes "**70****W" and or "SM70905W," with the codes presented in a dot matrix format on the threaded side part of the jar's metal lid.
The FDA said an ingredient change to the sauce in June resulted in the addition of the fish protein but the ingredient statements on the private labels weren't changed. The problem was discovered during a FDA label review.
Customers with the recalled product can contact the Dutch Kettle at 574-546-4033.
A list of the recalled private labels, by state, is available at http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/dutchkettle10_07.html.
