OAKLAND, Calif., Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Residents of San Francisco and Oakland, Calif., are facing several lifestyle changes in order to meet state environmental goals.

Metropolitan Transportation Commission and Association of Bay Area Government leaders have said that while a recent poll found most area residents are prepared for such changes, only the future will show how such lifestyle alterations work out, The San Francisco Chronicle said Saturday.

"The challenge for us is, are we going to be able to walk the talk?" association executive director Henry Gardner said. "We've been talking for a long time about focused growth, smart growth, but there has not been a lot of smart walk."

California currently has goals in place regarding greenhouse gas emissions and the two cities are struggling to approach these strict regulations.

Among the significant changes being proposed to help both locales reach the environmentally friendly goals is the implementation of tolls on busy area roads and in highly congested business districts.

The Chronicle said other changes could include building smaller homes in both cities and higher gasoline taxes.
