X-ray spacecraft to search for black holes
JERUSALEM, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Archaeologists in Israel are confirming the discovery of traces of the First Temple built by King Solomon more than 800 years before the birth of Christ.
The find was made by accident last summer during the digging of a trench by the Moslem Waqf on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, IsraelNN.com reported Monday.
Personnel of the Israel Antiquities Authority said the dig uncovered an archaeological level in the southeastern corner of the raised platform surrounding the Dome of the Rock that dated to the First Temple Period.
Jerusalem District Archaeologist Yuval Baruch says they uncovered fragments of ceramic table wares, animal bones and many other objects characteristic of the First Temple Period.
The location of the find may aid scholars in reconstructing the dimensions and boundaries of the Temple Mount as it existed between the 9th and 5th centuries BCE.
The First Temple was destroyed in 422 BCE.
An archaeological seminar on the find is being planned.
